Do you have Candida overgrowth?

I have been treating patients with Candida overgrowth in my Clinic as long as I can remember. Candida overgrowth is quite common, but it should not be ignored, particularly since there is an increase of Candida albicans and other species overgrowth in our society.  During the covid19 pandemic, we were more stressed; we ate more sugar, and simple carbohydrates, perhaps we also had more alcohol, and did not have enough sun exposure for Vitamin D. Clinical manifestations vary according to severity of infection. A great number of people suffer from a collection of symptoms because of the spread of Candida in their body. There is no age limit for Candida overgrowth. I have seen babies, children, men, and women of all ages affected by Candida overgrowth.

We all have Candida as commensal yeast-like fungi which live in harmony with good bacteria. Patients usually remain unaware of Candida overgrowth until specialised screening tests when blood that is put under a microscope reveals it. This test is available in our clinic. We usually think of Candida as a reoccurring thrush, but its symptoms are more systemic. Usually, the conditions which are experienced are not severe enough to endanger life, but are certainly sufficient to produce a range of debilitating symptoms.

What is Candida?

Candida is a single-cell yeast which is normally present in the bowel, and coexists with friendly bacteria. It feeds on the simple carbohydrates such as sugar, bread, biscuits cakes, and fermented foods such as cheese, alcohol, and vinegar. If the immune system is healthy the growth of Candida can be kept under control. There are about 200 species of Candida.

What causes Candida overgrowth?

The most common cause of Candida overgrowth is weakening of the immune system by prescription drugs such as antibiotics, contraceptive pill, and steroids, poor diet,  excessive alcohol consumption, stress, illness, hormonal imbalance or lack of sleep and sun exposure depravation.

What are the symptoms of Candida overgrowth?

The symptoms can be digestive but also affect any other system in the body: mouth, ears, finger nails, nose, reproductive organs and toe nails:

Constipation and /or diarrhoea

Bloating

Indigestion

Heartburn/reflux

Food sensitivities or allergies

Constant feeling of fatigue and “foggy brain”

Anxiety, irritability

Acne

Migraine

Muscular pain

Cystitis, thrush

Menstrual problems, premenstrual tension

Personality changes (irritability, aggression)

Personality changes like irritability, aggression, and being short-tempered is one symptom of Candida overgrowth.

What Specialised Screening  Test can tell about Candida?

There are a few signs of candida overgrowth which can be observed in live blood samples: these are fungal hypha (white bright and large circular structures moving rapidly in the blood) fungal blastospores, and “leaky gut”. These signs can be monitored during the treatment protocol and after completion of the treatment. This test is available in our clinic and the results are available on the spot.

What can I do about Candida overgrowth?

A naturopathic practitioner can assist in eradicating candida, repairing your leaky gut and supporting those body systems which are affected. Diet is an important part of Candida elimination protocol and it should consist of fresh whole foods. Sugar, sweets, soft dinks, fruit juices, fermented foods, mushrooms, alcohol, and yeasts should be completely avoided during the treatment. I put the patient on a very specific protocol and a diet. The length of the treatment depends on the severity of symptoms and infected body systems and should be a minimum of six (6) weeks and often longer.

What can I expect from the naturopathic treatment?

My patients are not only gradually freeing themselves from Candida symptoms, but also have reported to me that they never felt better, their psoriasis, eczema, irritable bowel syndrome, and other symptoms are resolving, and energy has improved. Candida diet and treatment also assist is healthy weight loss, for some as much as ten (10) kilograms were reported lost in four months.”
