We have an unusual strain of viral infection this winter. The symptoms are not necessarily the usual aches and pains, temperature, or a dry unproductive cough. Many people experience laryngitis, and if not treated they lose their voice and the infection appears to be symptom free one day, only to come back the next; and this can drag on for months. Some patients may even lose their voice for few months. We must treat viral infections as soon as possible, as not only are we cross infecting our loved ones and people around us, but the biggest concern is that some people “soldier on” too early and do not leave sufficient time for convalescence.

Did you have a viral infection this winter? Do you still not feel 100%?

We see patients with viral infections all year round, but winter and spring in particular are favourable for viral infections with the wet and cold weather. The high Australian dollar has encouraged people to travel overseas thus exposing our population to different strains of viruses. Post viral syndrome is of concern as well. Though debilitating, post-viral fatigue syndrome does improve over time. Some patients may experience symptoms for a few months, whereas others may have had symptoms for many years. Patients can help themselves by not overworking on the days that they feel good, but try to maintain a consistent routine every day, gradually building up exercise and activity. Support from natural medicine can put an end to the ups and downs of post-viral fatigue syndrome.

Post-viral fatigue syndrome is a common disorder, characterized by unexplained persistent or relapsing chronic fatigue for at least six months duration. It is not the result of ongoing exertion, and is not substantially alleviated by rest. It results in a substantial reduction of previous levels of occupational, educational, social, or personal activities. Common concurrent symptoms include impairment of memory or concentration, diffuse pain, sore throat, tender lymph nodes; headaches of a new type, pattern, or severity; and unrefreshing sleep. Patients are also complaining of exhaustion, fatigue, muscle aches and pains, and invariable psychiatric symptoms such as emotional instability, poor memory/concentration, and depression.

Initially, infection starts with symptoms of viral infections which can suppress immune system, cause food allergies, chemical sensitivities, low energy, a sudden drop in blood pressure, sleep disturbance, leaky gut, IBS, poor detoxification of chemicals, and nutritional deficiencies. It can then progress into post viral syndrome.

Common viruses that cause persistent or latent viral infections are: hepatitis B, herpes virus simplex, herpes zoster, cytomegavirus, Epstein –Barr virus (glandular fever), papovaviruses (that cause warts) and arboviruses causing Ross River fever. A virus can express itself differently in different hosts. Ebstein barr virus for instance has been associated with a chronic fatigue syndrome characterised by fatigue, headache and parasthesia.

Persistent viral infections may be the cause of neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s dementia, Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, SLE and many more. So it is worthwhile to see a holistic practitioner and resolve viral infections right from the beginning. Live blood microscopy, available in our Clinic, is an excellent and instant tool to indentify viral infection. Then depending on the symptoms and whether this is a viral infection or post viral fatigue syndrome, appropriate supplements are dispensed. Patients usually recover within weeks of the treatment. Liz, 48, had post-viral syndrome for 12 months while not realising it. She was blaming her stress level for not feeling well. Live blood microscopy had revealed a viral infection and only just after one month of treatment her infection was completely resolved. “I forgot what it feels like to have more energy,” she said.

This month we have a special offer: Live Blood Microscopy and a short consultation for only $140 – save $80. This offer expires on 31 August 2012 and is available for the first 30 customers only.

RESEARCH NOTES – St. John’s Wort – Clinical Trial (2012)

The evaluation of the clinical effect of topical St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum L.) in plaque type psoriasis vulgaris: A pilot study

Psoriasis is an autoimmune inflammatory skin disease characterised by the hyper-proliferation of keratinocytes and plaque formation. This is associated with lymphocyte (white blood cells) infiltration and other inflammatory markers. St. John’s Wort is known as a powerful inhibitor of inflammation.

It has been used traditionally for wound healing and inflammatory conditions. The efficacy of topical St. John’s Wort for the treatment of psoriasis was investigated in a recent Australian single-blinded, placebo-controlled pilot study. Ten patients with plaque type psoriasis applied St. John’s Wort cream (5%) to one side of their body and a placebo cream to the other side of their body over four weeks. Plaques were assessed both before and after treatment. PASI (psoriasis area severity scores) which measures erythema, scaling and thickness of plaques, was used to assess response to treatment. It was found that all three measurements were significantly lowered by treatment with St. John’s Wort cream. These results are promising as medical treatment usually includes treatment with cortisol cream which may ultimately weaken the skin with repeated use. Hopefully larger controlled clinical studies will clarify its efficacy in psoriasis in the future. (Source Optimal Rx, August 2012)

A new healing range of skin products for a wide range of skin condtions is available in our clinic. We also sell healing herbal teas assisting in many health conditions.

At last a healing skin range which will help your skin and muscular conditions that it’s even safe to eat.

We are proud to launch the first of our Healing Remedies skin care range to all those in need of relief. We present to you toning, soothing and nourishing products packed with finest quality carriers’ oils, infused oils, essential oils, Aloe Vera gel and herbs all full of nutrients. Fresh herbs are used in some products as we want them to be as natural as possible.

Healing Remedies is a skin range which fills the gap in existing therapeutic skin ranges. The massive production of many therapeutic skin care products can involve the inclusion of harmful ingredients or preservatives. My patients have often reacted to these commercial products and therefore topical application of was not often possible. Our products are handmade in order to avoid the energy or vibration of machinery.

Topical applications for rare skin and muscular conditions are often not available. So over the last 15 years I developed my own skin care products for my patients who had various skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, acne, wound healing or ear infections. Each remedy had a nickname like Hanna, who first benefited from my Aromatherapy foot serum in her persistent tinea, Alison who used my Acne and Blemish gel before her wedding, Little James who was given Ear Relief for his ear infection, Janet with my Eczema cream and Anti-aging Serum or Joseph with a sciatica using St John’s Wort Oil.

We have included some ancient and forgotten remedies like Amber tincture or St John’s Wort infused oil. If a patient comes to me with a headache to our Clinic, a few drops on the temples and wrist relieves it within a minute. If sciatica or neuralgia is a problem I give a sample bottle of St John’s wort oil and send the patient to my amenities room to apply the oil on the affected area. The relief of pain is within few minutes. Healing Remedies products are free from:

  • steroids
  • paraffin
  • glycerine
  • parabens
  • petrochemicals
  • sodium laurel sulphate
  • perfume
  • artificial colours
  • coal tar
  • lanolin
  • mineral oil

“He had been on a common prescription medication for three years and his mother was seriously concerned with the long-term side effects… Three days before the second consultation the mother took her son off prescription medication, this was done in consultation with her Medical Practitioner. All of the patients’ symptoms had disappeared. He is still off his medication and is doing well at school, his parents and teachers are very pleased with his progress.”

“Scientist have discovered the strongest link yet between antiperspirants  and Britain’s soaring rate of breast cancer. They detected chemicals  in breast tumors which are commonly used in under-arm sprays, make-up  and foods. The preservatives, called parabens are absorbed through the  skin, a study found.”

This  follows an earlier warning
“Use of antiperspirants has been linked with the rise in breast  cancer. Scientists have called for more research into chemical compounds  derived from zirconium and aluminum used in some deodorants”.
Pg 14, Metro (UK), June 16 2003

“Alarming  new evidence of a possible link between antiperspirants and breast cancer  emerged yesterday. The lead author of the report urged women to cut down  on or ditch deodorants and antiperspirants. Dr Phillippa Darbre said  the research added to growing evidence of a link between increasing  rates of the disease and the huge market for underarm sprays and roll-ons..  My advice is to cut down or cut out, said Dr Darbre, a breast cancer  specialist at the University of Reading (UK).. Concerns about antiperspirants  centre on the fact that parabens mimic the effects of the hormone oestrogen,  which is known to stimulate tumours in two thirds of women with breast  cancer.. As well as body odour products, parabens are found in many  other cosmetics including perfumes, sun creams and body lotions, and  are used as preservatives in a variety of foods.. The UK market for  such products is worth £400 million.”
